Gazprom Neft opened a second field on the Shelf of the Okhotsk Sea

Gazpromneft-Sakhalin, a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft, has finished the drilling and testing of the prospecting and appraisal well located at the Bautinsky formation, the Ayashsky license block in the Sea of Okhotsk. The works resulted in the discovery of a hydrocarbon field, with estimated geological reserves more than 137 million tonnes of oil equivalent. The new field is named Triton, in honor of the ancient sea God, Neptun’s son.

The decision to drill at the Bautinsky formation was made considering comprehensive expertise of the region, interpretation of 3D seismic data, as well as successful drilling experience in the Ayashsky license block. The Neptune field, one of the largest on the Sakhalin shelf, was discovered here in 2017. Its reserves comprise 415.8 million tonnes of oil (C1+C2).

The well construction at the Bautinsky formation involved the usage of advanced technological solutions, providing the work efficiency and completion in a timely manner.

“Since 2017, this is the second oil field, discovered at the Ayashsky license block. This fact allows us to consider the oil-production cluster formation on the Sakhalin shelf and the Russian Far East to become a new strategic region for Gazprom Neft. The Neptune and Triton fields development will open new significant opportunities for the island’s infrastructure improvement and for socio-economic growth in the Sakhalin region generally. We continue to study and develop all offshore license areas in our portfolio,” said Alexander Dyukov, Chairman of the Management Board, CEO, Gazprom Neft.

The Ayashsky license block, located in the Sea of Okhotsk in the northeastern part of the Sakhalin shelf, 55 km from the shoreline. The sea depth of the area is up to 90 m. The area earlier was checked with 3D seismic exploration works over 2,150 sq. km.

Gazpromneft Sakhalin is a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft. Core business activities are exploration and development of the oil and gas fields. The company is the exploration operator at Dolginskoye oil field, the North-West license block, the Kheisovsky license block, the Severo-Vrangelevsky license block, as well as the Ayashsky license block in the sea of Okhotsk.
