Industrial and environmental safety

The Prirazlomnaya is designed to ensure maximum oil production safety. The design takes into account the experience of leading US, Canadian and Norwegian oil majors, which have been operating in similar natural and climatic conditions for decades.

Strong wind and low temperatures dominate in the production area for 40 percent of the year, the number of storms annually reaches 22 with an average rough sea duration of 9.5 days. Stable ice cover lasts for seven months a year from November to May. The platform is designed to ensure maximum oil production safety in the Arctic and can sustain maximum ice pressure and 10-meter high sea waves.

The Prirazlomnaya is a new industrial facility (its active construction began in 2008) equipped with everything necessary for safe operations. A special deflector made of heavy-duty steel protects the platform from waves and ice pressure. It is a 16.4-meter high wall with an inclined top to prevent overflowing of waves.

For better resistance to corrosion and wear-and-tear the caisson wall has a layer of 4-cm thick laminated steel and the three-meter space between the layers is filled with super durable concrete. Special paint-and-lacquer coating, as well as cathodic and anodic shields protect it from high humidity and aggressive maritime environment. The safety margin of the platform several times exceeds potential loads on it and can sustain a direct torpedo strike.

Caisson and berm design

The Prirazlomnaya operates according to the zero discharge principle. The used drilling liquid, sludge and other waste are pumped into a special absorbing well. In its turn, the drainage-collected and purified oil and lubricant-containing water, polluted rainwater and snow are pumped back into the bed to a major depth, which is the safest waste utilization method in the world.

The Prirazlomnaya operates an automatic safety control system. It remotely and automatically controls production processes, preparation, storage and shipment of crude, electric power generation and distribution. The system also controls fire and gas situation, the emergency equipment and technological processes.

Safety system

The platform has all the necessary systems to ensure safe production, as well as rescue means for the personnel. Rescue and evacuation systems for the platform personnel include evacuation corridors with emergency lights and walls that resist fire for 120 minutes, a temporary shelter on the mezzanine deck, evacuation bridges and SED-2D systems with sleeves and life rafts with individual rescue means (life vests, rings and drysuits), tanker-like lifeboats for lowering into the open sea.
